On June 29th 2008 I was ordained deacon at Manchester cathedral and started three year curacy here at Pennington. Let me explain.
I was raised a Baptist and, as a teenager, often sat in church and thought that I might end up at the front as a Baptist minister. The thoughts never really went away and all my adult life I have had a nagging feeling that there was something waiting for me, something I had to do.
I remember driving across America on my way through New Mexico and Arizona and looking at the huge open spaces and knowing, absolutely knowing, that there was something special for me to do and wondering at the time if it might be to do with the physics degree I was doing with the Open University.
A few years later I was sat in the car at the traffic lights outside Leigh fire station listening to the radio and following a debate between the Astronomer Royal and a leading cleric (I can’t remember either of their names) and realising right there and then what I was being called to do.
My studies of physics and maths had shown me how things worked, how electricity worked, how to measure the effects of gravity, even how the planets moved through space and how stars were born but none of it explained WHY !!!
That was the start of a 6 year journey to my being able to tell you about ordination next year.
Over the last few years I have had countless interviews with people all testing out my sense of calling to ordained ministry. A year’s study with the Diocesan Director of Ordinands on the Old Testament and a failed selection conference spanned the two of the years and the last 50 months have been on the Northern Ordination Course in Manchester.
The sense of there being something I have to do has gone now, because I know what it is, but it has been replaced with a deeper sense of wonder. Just what made God think I was worth saving and, even more amazing, what made him call me to ministry ??? !!!
